Biobix, laboratorium for Bioinformatics and computational genomics is

embedded in the Molecular Biotechnology Department from the

Bioscience Engineering Faculty (FBE).

Within BIOBIX there is a general focus on
systems biology and comparative genomics (junk mining)
reflected in different supported technologies: metabonomics, wavelets, phylogenetic footprinting,
heterogenous data-integration statistics, ncRNA detection and target prediction,
selection of novel targets ...besides others.

These technologies are applied in many different disease areas, namely cancer,
aging, heart disease, malaria & asthma. In addition we have developed an
extensive industrial collaboration in the field of personalized medicine based on methylation profiles (methylomics).

During the past years our lab gained profound expertise in integrating diverse

bioinformatics applications, reflected in our own product Biolinux,

complemented with advanced interfaces in a services framework. We

developed an enhanced toolbox for phylogeny and incongruency

detection (horizontal gene transfer). Through past industrial collaborations

the lab also gained experience in accommodating large scale genomic projects

including genome-wide cloning, tracking and molecular biology based LIMS.

Our lab has also extensive IT knowledge in setting up
high performance computer environments
and is one of the few European labs actively

mirroring all available sequence data on dedicated hardware using in-house

software. We actively develop data warehouses using Oracle in addition to

many open source based databases.

In addition we gathered a large body of
teaching and training experience

in basic Bioinformatics and related fields (current courses include

bioinformatics I and bioinformatics II. a short crash-course version and

workshop (MyGPCR) Microarray analysis using Bioconductor (Preprocessing,
Detection of differential expression, Clustering), Machine learning for molecular diagnostics
and dedictated software tutorials e.g. vectorNTI.

BIOBIX is a Bioinformatics knowledge center of Bioscope-IT The BioScope-IT project is FlandersBio's bioinformatics Service Project to help lower the threshold for Flemish biotech companies to apply bioinformatics. Since 2002 BioinfoMatrix.NET, has become during the past years a standard bioinformatics Blog.
